Kildee Announces New Federal Funds for United Way of Genesee County

May 9, 2023

WASHINGTON—Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-08) today announced new federal funding that will support an AmeriCorps program addressing areas of critical need in mid-Michigan, including food security and nutrition, access to health care and blight elimination.

The $444,074 federal grant, awarded to the United Way of Genesee County through the 2023 AmeriCorps State and National Grants program, will sponsor 24 AmeriCorps service members based in Flint. These AmeriCorps members will be responsible for connecting 1,000 residents to water crisis recovery resources, supporting ten community organizations and coordinating extensive blight reduction projects.

“Our community is a better place to live, work and raise a family thanks to the strong partnership between AmeriCorps and the United Way of Genesee County,” said Congressman Kildee. “I am proud to announce new federal funding that will help feed our neighbors, make health care more accessible and clean up blight.  In Congress, I will continue working to bring federal resources back to mid-Michigan.”

“United Way of Genesee County thanks Congressman Kildee for helping to secure this AmeriCorps funding. With these new resources, we will help Flint residents respond to some of their greatest challenges—addressing food insecurity, cleaning up blighted properties and dealing with the long-term effects of the water crisis,” said Jamie Gaskin, CEO of United Way of Genesee County.

Congressman Kildee remains committed to securing funding for the community organizations serving mid-Michigan neighborhoods. In February, Kildee announced new federal funding that will support a new local AmeriCorps program helping to improve financial literacy and overall economic wellbeing among mid-Michigan families.
